PaperMC vs. SpigotMC and v1.20 & v1.20.1 Updates

So in the past 6 months since our last post, we switched back to SpigotMC from PaperMC. This is because PaperMC seems to be going a little over-the-top when it comes to aggressively optimizing the performance of Minecraft, unfortunately to the point that it’s breaking a lot of plugins that we require for the Amplified Moosh server. And some of these are pretty basic plugins like EssentialsX, WorldGuard, WorldEdit, etc. Admittedly, some of this is because some of our plugins are rather ancient (not our fault — we didn’t write them!), but in our defense of continuing to use these, there just haven’t been any replacement plugins that do the same things. So, we switched back to good ol’ SpigotMC…

…for a while…

But then because Amplified Moosh isn’t the only server we run/host, we started having problems with hosting the three other servers on the same box because SpigotMC just isn’t as optimized as PaperMC, which easily allows us to run all four servers.

…sigh…

Back to PaperMC we went and we had to get WAY too into some of our plugins to work around incompatibilities with PaperMC, but we did it. And just in time, too, but behold! The v1.20 update arrived! Followed immediately by the v1.20.1 update (oops…Microsoft…).

So, that’s where we now are — back on PaperMC running v1.20.1 on all the servers. I don’t know how much longer we’ll be able to keep Amplified Moosh running on it (because eventually PaperMC is just going to stop supporting legacy plugins), but we’ll keep it up as long as we can!

As of this upcoming November/December, the Amplified Moosh server will have been up and running (in some capacity) for a decade! That’s right — we have been up and running since MineCon 2013 when MooshroomJockey (aka, Steve on a Mooshroom) made is grand appearance at (and winning) the MineCon 2013 Costume Contest! So, we will keep it going as long as we can. We’re always on the lookout for being able to move on to more modern, better supported plugins, so hopefully we’ll be able to keep it going for quite a while.

TEN YEARS. That’s just crazy!
